The very earliest glass chess sets were made in the 9th century in the then Islamic empire. The original glass chess sets which are even used today were made in the 19th century in Italy. History seems to suggest that the early glass chess sets were mostly used as form of decoration instead of playing. Various designs of the glass chess sets were manufactured by the then well-known glass companies during the 20th century. These chess sets are now made in various forms. They are among the most popular mediums in which many artists make a demonstration of their chess game talents. The talents to be demonstrated while playing glass chess sets include creation of the traditional chess pieces and representing buildings in skyline of New York City. These chess sets are available in an array of chess boards. Some chessboards are made of glass; others are made of wood while others have a mirror finish. Those with chess boards made of mirror have a stunning look. Those made of wood have storage sections beneath the board in which the glass pieces are stored.
